Ableton Live 12: What Can We Expect From The New Release?

Ableton returns to the stage with a bang, unveiling the long-awaited Ableton Live 12, a significant update that has stirred up waves in the music industry. With a plethora of enhancements and new features, Ableton Live 12 is set to redefine the boundaries of digital audio workstations (DAWs).

A Glimpse Into the Past

Ableton Live has been a mainstay in the music production scene for over two decades, evolving from a simple clip-based concept to an extensive platform for music creation. From its inception in 2001, it has continually grown, introducing significant updates such as the Simpler in version 4, the Drum Rack in version 7, and audio to MIDI support in version 9. Fast forward to 2021, and version 11 introduced the Hybrid Reverb and Spectral Resonator, among many other alluring features.

Introducing Ableton Live 12: A New Chapter

Nearly three years after the release of version 11, Ableton Live 12 arrives, packing a punch with a host of exciting new additions and improvements. From transformative MIDI capabilities to a more intuitive user interface, Ableton Live 12 is set to be a game-changer.

New and Enhanced Devices

Ableton Live 12 brings two thrilling additions to the table: Meld and Roar. Meld, a bi-timbral ‘macro oscillator’ synth, brings a wealth of varied sounds to your fingertips. It’s an MPE-capable device that allows for greater expressiveness, with a wide palette of sounds ranging from FM organs to evolving pads and noisy elements.

The second major addition is Roar, a multi-stage saturation and distortion effect. Capable of delivering anything from subtle colour to bizarre glitchy effects, Roar boasts several non-linear saturation curves and three saturation stages. You can use it to beef up sounds or utterly destroy them; the choice is yours.

Transformative MIDI Tools

Ableton Live 12 provides a host of transformative MIDI tools to revolutionise your compositions. This includes nine advanced arpeggiation and articulation tools that allow you to create different MIDI notes and progressions. You can stretch and compress notes, add legato patterns, and much more.

Moreover, there are generative tools for creating ideas from scratch. These include the Rhythm tool for generating rhythmic patterns, Shape for generating melodies based on constraints, Stacks for chord generation, and Seed for random note generation.

A More Intuitive Workflow

Ableton Live 12 introduces a cleaner, more modern look that removes visual complexity and keeps the focus on your music. Key features include the ability to view both your devices and the Clip Editor at the same time, as well as automation and device parameters.

The Mixer, previously only available in Session View, can now be used in Arrangement View, making it easier to make detailed mixing decisions. Significant improvements to the browser, such as tagging and a new Sound Similarity Search, make finding the right sound easier than ever.

Accessibility and Navigation Improvements

Committed to inclusivity, Ableton Live 12 introduces features that make it more accessible for visually impaired users. It seamlessly integrates with assistive technologies, such as screen readers, and offers new keyboard shortcuts to navigate almost all aspects of Live.

New Sound Packs

Ableton Live 12 introduces new sound packs, such as the Performance Pack, offering a set of devices for a more customised live performance experience. Other additions include the Lost and Found pack, featuring unique foley recordings and unlikely instruments, and the Beats Tool Pack, offering 120 Drum Racks, over 180 loops, and effects.

Cool Additions

MIDI Transformations and Generators

You can easily create a range of simple or complex variations to your MIDI clips. You can add ornaments, connect successive notes and chords, simulate guitar strums, or choose from a set of generative algorithms to produce melodies, rhythms, and chords that follow the constraints you define.

MIDI Editor Improvements

You can rearrange the order of a group of notes based on pitch, velocity or duration. You can also stretch, split, chop or join notes in different ways. Additionally, you can adjust the velocity of notes more easily, transpose them into a particular scale, or add intervals chromatically or in key.

Keys and Scales

To see the notes of a specific key in Live’s Control Bar, select it and apply it to any clip you create. You can then edit the clips using scale highlighting as a guide, or use the clip scale to transform and generate musical ideas. Additionally, you can synchronize the scale of MIDI devices and instruments with the clip being played.

Tuning System

Access tunings outside the 12-tone equal temperament system using Live’s devices and any MPE-capable plugin.
